Racing oil or ordinary motor oil?

They are built for different jobs — and the most expensive oil is the wrong choice half the time. Here is the honest difference.

If you read one thing

Racing oil is built for heat, revs and maximum wear protection — and sacrifices what a daily driver needs: long-life additives, cold-start behaviour and catalytic-converter compatibility. If you run on track, use racing oil and change it often. If you drive a daily, use ordinary oil to the manufacturer's spec. And if you have a classic engine with a flat-tappet cam, you need a third thing: street oil with high zinc (ZDDP), made for exactly that.

What racing oil is optimised for

A track engine lives a short, hard life: high revs, high oil temperature, maximum load — and an oil change after every weekend. Racing oil is formulated for exactly that: high ZDDP (zinc/phosphorus) as a sacrificial anti-wear film under extreme contact pressure, shear stability so the oil film holds at high rpm, and foam control when the crankcase whips the oil. Some racing ranges are also formulated for methanol and ethanol fuels, which make demands of their own.

The bill for all this is paid elsewhere: racing oil is made for short intervals. It does not prioritise long-term detergency, extended-drain stability or cold starts on a dark winter morning — it does not need to, because it gets changed anyway.

Why it does not belong in a daily driver

Running racing oil in a daily driver does not wreck the engine overnight — but you pay more for worse everyday protection. Three reasons:

The interval. A daily covers 10–15,000 km between changes. A racing oil's additive package is not sized to keep an engine clean and acids neutralised for that long.

The catalytic converter. The high zinc and phosphorus that protect a racing cam gradually poison the converter. That is why modern street oils carry low ZDDP — emissions rules and converter life dictate it.

Cold starts and economy. Street oils are formulated for frequent cold starts and fuel economy — your everyday. Racing oil is formulated for an engine warmed up in the paddock before it is loaded.

In short: follow the car maker's specification in the daily. That is what "the right oil" means — not the label with the most motorsport on it.

The exception: classic engines with flat-tappet cams

Here the picture flips. Engines designed before the roller-cam era — most American V8s and European classics well into the eighties — were designed around oils with far more zinc than today's street oils carry. Cam and lifters slide metal on metal, and without the ZDDP sacrificial film the cam lobes wear flat — a well-known and expensive failure in classic engines fed modern low-zinc oil.

The answer is neither ordinary modern oil nor pure track oil, but the third category: street oil with elevated ZDDP, formulated for classic street use — normal intervals and cold starts, but with the zinc level the old valvetrain demands. If the classic has a catalytic converter (rare), the converter caveat above applies here too.

Driven DT50 air-cooled high performance motor oil is designed for high power output of air-cooled engines with aggressive camshafts. An air-cooled engine needs an oil that handles high temperatures and that has particularly good properties when it comes to wear. The Driven HR series is the perfect choice for many classic road and competition cars. The products in this series contain enough ZDDP to protect mechanical valve lifters with spring pressures up to 30% higher than standard. The oil is designed to be changed after approximately 12,500 km. The HR oils have a unique anti-corrosion package that protects engines that are started infrequently, eliminates the harmful effects of dry starts, and they also contain an ethanol-neutralizing additive to combat internal rust corrosion. If the oil is used for racing or track days: Change the oil if it starts to turn black, as this usually indicates that fuel has interacted with the oil. Racing places increased stress on the oil. Although Driven HR oils use a more thermally stable base oil and a top-quality multigrade additive, the oil will begin to thin out after several hours of racing. While the level of thinning is much lower than most other performance oils, it is important to keep an eye on oil pressure. We recommend using the XP series if the engine is used exclusively for racing. Make sure you have warmed up the engine so that the oil is hot before draining it. Refill with the correct viscosity recommended by your manufacturer or engine builder. The HR series are excellent storage oils, as they contain specially developed additives to protect against rust and corrosion typically caused by moisture and ethanol from fuel.
