Do air tools still earn their place?

Power per gram. An air motor is in effect a turbine in an aluminium housing — no electric motor, no windings, no battery. That is why an air impact wrench delivers huge torque from a tool smaller and lighter than the battery version of equal pull. After a day working overhead, every gram counts.

Continuous duty. An air tool runs for as long as the compressor delivers — grinding, chiselling and bolting hour after hour with no heat breaks, no battery swaps, no charging. At production pace that is decisive.

Simple mechanics that take abuse. Fewer parts, no electronics, no cells that age. A well-oiled quality air tool commonly outlives three generations of battery platforms — and when it finally needs service, it is seals and vanes, not a circuit board.

No battery economics. Batteries are the consumable in a battery tool: they age, they cost, and platform changes force repurchases. An air tool has no such ticking clock.

Price per tool. Once the workshop has a compressor, each additional air tool is cheap — the same air line drives the impact wrench, the sander, the chisel hammer and the spray gun, several at once on their own hoses.

Let us be just as honest the other way: mobility is the battery's home ground. Out on site, on the roof, in the trench, in the car parked at the customer's — the battery tool rules there. No compressor to haul, no hose to run.

Noise and neighbours: the battery tool itself is quieter than its air twin, and there is no compressor humming in the background.

Precision and electronics: modern battery wrenches can control torque electronically and log tightenings — in structural bolting and documentation-heavy trades that is a real advantage.

The entry cost: without an existing air system, battery is the cheapest way to start. Compressor, hoses and upkeep are an investment that pays off once several tools share it.

So both have their place — and we sell both. The question is not "which is best?" but "where is the work done?".

The price an air tool pays for its simplicity is care of the system around it:

Dry air. Condensation in the air line is the air tool's worst enemy — a water separator (and ideally an aftercooler) is not an accessory, it is a precondition. Moist air rusts vanes and ruins paint results.

Lubrication. A few drops of air-tool oil daily, or an inline mist oiler — that is the whole secret behind the tools that "never quit".

The right pressure and hose. Most air tools are specified at about 6.3 bar working pressure. Too thin a hose or restrictive couplings steal pressure under load — lack of power is more often the hose than the tool.

And as always: the compressor must actually deliver — check the tools' air consumption against the compressor's FAD at working pressure, not against the motor rating.
